We snack and munch all day long, and often we get guilty about it and look for something a little healthier. What if we could snack on something that can protect our bodies against cancer, heart disease, and cholesterol? Just a handful of almonds a day can do all of these things with very few calories.

An almond is the pit of a seed that could grow into a beautiful tree that is native to South and East Asia. The seed’s shell isn’t hard to crack open and inside is a brown, wrinkly nut. These are often toasted and tossed with salt to make them taste better. Dry roasted almonds contain enough protein, vitamin E, calcium, and fiber to create a healthy lifestyle.

Almonds tend to be somewhat fatty, but not the wrong kind of fat. The oils in almonds are actually the same type as olive oil, which happen to be extremely good for the body and within two weeks can actually reduce cholesterol. This lowers risk for heart disease. A handful of almonds can regulate blood fats better than a whole wheat muffin, despite the difference in fat levels. Almonds are tasty and healthy for the heart.

Other nutrients can be found in the almond such as flavenoids and vitamin E. The flavenoids are antioxidants and can be found in the skin of the almond. Vitamin E is something that can prevent the creation of reactive oxygen species upon oxidation of the free radicals in the blood stream, and is found in the almond’s flesh. Together, they double the antioxidant potentials each would separately contain. They also contain more than 20 other potent flavenoids and antioxidants, including ones that could be found in green tea and grapefruit.

A handful of almonds daily may sound monotonous, but they don’t have to be taken the same way every day. Almonds can be eaten in a variety of ways, from desserts to dinners. One could make almond brittle, drink almond milk, use almond butter in their cooking, or make almond broccoli and chicken for two and share the nutritional meal. Getting healthy doesn’t have to be a struggle. Just a handful of almonds every day can boost the body’s immune system and improve quality of life.

Whether it’s for heart disease, weight loss, or a better immunity to unstable molecules in the body, almonds may help anyone with their issues. Even if there aren’t any issues, almonds can boost how you feel and prevent future issues. Just try it for two weeks and see if there’s a difference, and remember to mix it up–there’s no use in taking something until you hate it.

Goji berries will never let your body forget the company if all the essential vitamins. These berries are found in Tibet and Mongolia and offer you numerous nutrients and vitamins like 18 amino acids, Vitamin B1, B2, B6, C and vitamin E. these berries are known to be the richest source of beta carotene which is found in carrots. Goji berries are also the second richest in containing vitamin C.

These berries are known to have more vitamin C even than oranges. The vitamin E which is found only in seeds and grains and rarely in fruits, can be found in high quality in goji berries. Selenium, zinc, iron, phosphorus, calcium and germanium also accompany the other minerals and vitamins in goji berries. These antioxidants, minerals and vitamins make the goji berry the wonder fruit.

21 trace minerals consisting germanium will always keep you away from cancer. This is an anti-cancer trace mineral which is very rare to be found in the food. Goji berries contain 13% more proteins than the whole wheat. The complete spectrum of the antioxidant caroteniods is found in abundance in these berries as compared to all known foods. Goji berries are gaining popularity owing to their innumerable qualities and features.

It’s been proven that goji berries contain a huge amount of Vitamin C, more than oranges and other fruits do. Even the stardardized test by the US Department of Agriculture that measures the Total Antioxidant Potency of foods and supplements or ORAC (Oxygen Radical Absorbance Capacity) Scale attests to the power of goji berries. Having an ORAC scale of 25,300, which is also attributed to its high content of Vitamin C, makes it really a very potent fruit. But why do we need a good amount of Vitamin C?

Vitamin C is a water soluble of the vitamins which means it can easily be dissolved and excreted by our body, hence can never really be stored for long. Also humans can’t synthesize this in vivo that’s why we have to depend on foods and supplements to get adequate amount of it. With these reasons, we have to supply our body with regular doses of it for proper functioning.

One main function of Vitamin C is in the synthesis of collagen, which is a very significant component of bones, tendons, ligaments, blood vessels, skin, and even the heart. It’s a group of protein that’s almost found everywhere in the body including also the retina of the eyes, hair, and placenta in pregnant women. That’s why people who undergone surgery are required to eat lots of fruits and vegetables to be able to support fast and consistent wound healing.

Also, another important roles of Vitamin C is its capacity to help our body absorb required amount of iron, which is an important element for the blood to carry out its function in oxygen delivery; and its aid in the synthesis of gluthatione and carnitine, both which perform a crucial role in metabolism, and neurotransmitters, which are important for neuron to cell signals.

Vitamin C also acts a reducing agent to reverse oxidation process in the body. When there are lots of free radicals in the body compared to antioxidants, oxidative stress is the result which can lead to cardiovascular diseases, hypertension, inflammatory diseases, and diabetes. More to this, it’s also one of the front supports of our immune system.

There may be still more roles that Vitamin C play but due to some limitations, we can nevertheless just focus on these chief functions. After all, the benefits of Vitamin C don’t stop at the end of this article. It’s best that we take nutritious foods like goji berries so we can discover the real wonder of Vitamin C in our body.

An article from New Zealand’s “Newstalk NZ” reports that “People opposed to the Government’s Therapeutic Medicines Bill have been demonstrating in Auckland this morning. The Bill proposes tighter controls on herbal medicines including dietary supplements and vitamins.”

The EU Food Supplements Directive (Directive 2002/46/EC) which became effective August 1, 2005 severely limits the sale of vitamins and food supplements in Europe. A report by The Alliance for Natural Health discusses the dangers to health freedom.

The World Net Daily reports on the NAFTA agreement to align US nutritional regulations with Mexico and Canada which is undoubtedly what is behind the “Draft Guidance” issued by the FDA.

I normally don’t subscribe to conspiracy theories, but something fishy is going on here and it isn’t my fish oil supplement!

Why the world wide push to regulate food supplements and vitamins? A press release by Orthomolecular Medicine News Service on May 22, 2006, reveals that there have been ZERO deaths attributed to vitamin supplements. The only supplement known to cause death is Iron (a mineral), which I have repeatedly warned about. However, Dr. Saul of Orthomolecular Medicine reports that there are only about 2 deaths per year attributed to Iron, where as in 2003 there were 29 deaths attributed to aspirin!

I confess I have no proof, but I suspect there are some Big Pharmaceutical Companies behind this trend. Are they really afraid of losing profits to the heath food industry? Heaven forbid we eat right and stay healthy!

If you haven’t lodged your protest to this move do it now. April 30 is the deadline for comments with the FDA. Click here to make yourself heard.

Really Angry,

Tim

Earlier this month, I discussed with you our Pro Vitamin Complete. I briefly mentioned why we don’t include iron in our supplement. I read an article this week that really emphasized in my mind how important it is that you NOT use a supplement containing iron, so I need to address this issue again.

According to Merck Pharmaceuticals, “Iron poisoning is the leading cause of poisoning deaths in children.” If you have pre-natal vitamins or iron supplements left over from when your wife was pregnant, my advice is to flush them away. If you are taking a doctor perscribed iron supplement, keep them well out of reach of your children. When your baby starts crawling they get into everything and everything they find goes in their mouths.

It is also important to be aware that Iron poisoning can also effect men and post menopausal women. Iron is one nutrient that doesn’t naturally eliminate from the body, except for women during their childbearing years. Current research is showing that long term build up of Iron in the man’s body may lead to heart disease which may be why heart disease is far more common in men and post menopausal women.

I can’t encourage you enough to check your multi-vitamin label and make sure that you are not getting any extra iron. If you are an omnivore like me, you get iron in your diet. Even the occasional Big Mac provides plenty of iron.

Eating healthy,

Tim
