Do you remember when they had to hold you down as a kid to take your vitamins? The fact that people don’t want to take their vitamin is nothing new. Many people hate taking their vitamins because they can be a nuisance. Some people say they are just too big and they have trouble trying to swallow them. Other people say that they have so many pills to take daily that it is painful to take that many every day. This is why now there are liquid vitamins. Liquid vitamins provide you all the vitamins that you need daily. Often people that take vitamins are because they just don’t get enough from food or drink. Not only can it supply you with the vitamins, but it is also much easier to consume. All you have to do is pop the cap off and drink, that’s it!

In addition to the benefits typically derived from calcium, this Liquid Coral Calcium formula has significant advantages over other forms of calcium. Not only because it is readily absorbable due to its being in a liquid state, but because it also contains a wide variety of major and trace minerals essential for optimum health. Coral calcium may also help augment healthy muscle and nerve function.

An article from New Zealand’s “Newstalk NZ” reports that “People opposed to the Government’s Therapeutic Medicines Bill have been demonstrating in Auckland this morning. The Bill proposes tighter controls on herbal medicines including dietary supplements and vitamins.”

The EU Food Supplements Directive (Directive 2002/46/EC) which became effective August 1, 2005 severely limits the sale of vitamins and food supplements in Europe. A report by The Alliance for Natural Health discusses the dangers to health freedom.

The World Net Daily reports on the NAFTA agreement to align US nutritional regulations with Mexico and Canada which is undoubtedly what is behind the “Draft Guidance” issued by the FDA.

I normally don’t subscribe to conspiracy theories, but something fishy is going on here and it isn’t my fish oil supplement!

Why the world wide push to regulate food supplements and vitamins? A press release by Orthomolecular Medicine News Service on May 22, 2006, reveals that there have been ZERO deaths attributed to vitamin supplements. The only supplement known to cause death is Iron (a mineral), which I have repeatedly warned about. However, Dr. Saul of Orthomolecular Medicine reports that there are only about 2 deaths per year attributed to Iron, where as in 2003 there were 29 deaths attributed to aspirin!

I confess I have no proof, but I suspect there are some Big Pharmaceutical Companies behind this trend. Are they really afraid of losing profits to the heath food industry? Heaven forbid we eat right and stay healthy!

If you haven’t lodged your protest to this move do it now. April 30 is the deadline for comments with the FDA. Click here to make yourself heard.

Really Angry,

Tim

So why do we have fiber in our Pro Vitamin Complete?
The USDA recommends 38 grams of fiber per day for men and 25 grams of fiber per day for women. I really work at eating a high fiber diet but there are days I fall short of the recommendation. So getting 4 extra grams in my vitamin is a big plus for me. (most 100% whole wheat bread gives you 2 grams of fiber per slice!)

Why is fiber so important? That is equivalent to Elizabeth Barrett Browning’s “How do I love thee? Let me count the ways.” (Take your phone off the hook, this may take a while.)

Soluble Fiber actually forms a kind of gel when it meets with liquid. It stays in the stomach longer and so the sugars are released into the blood slower. This is critical for folks with diabetes. My friend in South Carolina has been able to cut her medications in half since going high fiber. If you are diabetic, don’t cut your meds on your own. Monitor your blood sugars and consult with your doctor.

Insoluble Fiber is just that. It doesn’t digest or dissolve. So, why is it important if it is indigestible? Because it keeps everything moving!

In my last entry, I told you about the National Institutes of Health and their lack of position on the use of vitamins. Now, the real shocker.

There are researchers out there saying that your once a day multivitamin is harmful!
Their reasoning is that by taking a multivitamin people will decide their nutritional needs have been met, so they can live on junk food. Now that is the most backwards logic I have ever heard. In fact, I think it is pretty insulting.

Ok, I am done ranting.

But in light of all the controversy, I wanted to compare my Pro Vitamin Complete with the DRI (Dietary Reference Intakes). In every nutrient but iron, we exceeded the minimum and did not exceed the maximum. Why not iron? Because iron is one element that can be fatal if overdosed, particularly in children. If your doctor recommends iron, take an iron supplement. Don’t even buy multivitamins with iron, unless you keep them out of reach of your children.

In addition to the basic vitamins in Pro Vitamin Complete, it contains fiber, herbals, fruit and vegetable enzymes, essential fatty acids, trace minerals, whole green foods, liquid protein amino acids, and ellagic acid. In other words, it IS real food. Even better, it is liquid and is more easily absorbable than a pill.

There is one more thing I love about my Pro Vitamin. Have you ever taken a really complete vitamin/mineral pill? A few years ago my naturopath prescribed one for me. It was about an inch long and almost as wide. To get the required dose, I had to take them 3 times a day. (yep, it’s still in the cupboard.) With Pro Vitamin, I just down my 2 tablespoons, and I am ready to go.

One more word before I go. Pro Vitamin is great stuff, but it is serious as well. Follow the dosage information. More is not always better. If you need more of a specific vitamin, or mineral get an extra supplement. Do not increase your dose of the multivitamin.

Apparently while I wasn’t looking the National Institutes of Health had a consensus conference last year and they actually neglected to send me an invitation! Oh, well. The president doesn’t ask my advice either. Their consensus was a resounding “Duh.” Well, actually they said the evidence “insufficient to recommend either for or against the use of multivitamin/ multimineral supplements by the American public to prevent chronic disease.”

That set off a furor in the medical community and the health industry. I have spent the day reading articles by doctors flaming doctors.

Now, just remember this is my opinion, and I am not a doctor or nutritionist. From what I read, some recent studies are showing that taking a vitamin pill doesn’t help that much if you eat a balanced diet. That is a BIG IF.

So, I went to the USDA site and pulled up the Dietary Reference Intakes. Then I considered what I ate yesterday.

Breakfast:
1 banana
½ cup serving of oatmeal
Water with lemon

Sounds like a healthy, balanced diet? I missed the DRI on almost every nutrient listed except vitamin A and Phosphorus. Try this yourself at mypyramidtracker . Yesterdays food was actually pretty good. But there are days I crave a fast food hamburger, or am busy and forget a meal completely. So where do the other nutrients I need come from?
