For now we will stay in South America but travel across the continent to Peru. Camu Camu used in our Healthy Blend grows in the boggy Amazon Basin and most of the processing and exportation occurs in Lima, Peru. Since, exportation of the fresh fruit is not logistically possible, we use Reconstituted Camu-Camu Juice.

The Camu Camu fruit is a small pink to red berry and its extreme tartness is because of it amazingly high concentration of Vitamin C. In fact, Wikipedia reports 2%-3% of the fresh fruit weight is accountable to the Vitamin C! The truth is you would probably not even enjoy the fresh fruit as it is so sour.

While this little fruit may not be paletable alone, it add a great deal to our Healthy Blend Juice. According to Wikipedia “In addition to the high vitamin C content it contains the amino acids leucine and serine and is also rich in flavonoids.”

With Healthy Blend Juice you get all the benefit of this nutrient packed fruit, and a great taste as well.

Eating Healthy,

For the past week or so, we have talked about the 3 main superfruits in our Healthy Blend Juice. To satisfy the definition of a Superfruit according Wikipedia, the fruit must have 4 qualities.

Nutrient density

Antioxidant strength

Intensity of current basic medical research and, if applicable, status of existing human clinical trials

Potential for disease impact

Goji Berries, Mangosteen Fruit and Noni Fruit are all on Wikipedia’s list of superfruits. The juice of these 3 fruits comprise 60% of Healthy Blend Juice. The remaining 40% is comprised of reconstituted Acai Juice from whole Euterpe Oleracea fruit, reconstituted Camu-Camu Juice, USDA Organic Certified Aloe Vera Juice and Triple filtered water.

But, before I begin discussing the remaining 3 juices in Healthy Blend, I wanted to talk a bit about water.

Like you, when I buy vegetable juice, or orange juice, I don’t want to see water on the label. In this case, however water is added for the specific purpose of making the juice more appealing. All the juices in Healthy Blend are dense and each with strong distinctive flavors and require a bit of dilution.

The water we use is Triple Filtered. The water first passes through a filter that removes any sediment, then through a finer filter removing mineral deposits, finally through a charcoal filter to remove any remaining chemicals.

Personally, I no longer drink any tap water, except perhaps at restaurants. The tap water in my home smells so strong of chlorine that I worry about washing my clothes in it! I not only buy filtered water to drink and cook with, but I also “off gas” the water I use for watering my plants. (chlorine and flouride are very bad for your plants) The EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) has an interesting web page on Drinking Water . If you are not drinking purified water now, I strongly recommend you read this page.

I also recommend you read the label on the bottled water you purchase. I was shocked to see the additives in supposedly purified water from major distributors.

20% of a bottle of Healthy Blend Juice is from the Mangosteen Fruit. This fruit is mostly grown in Southeast Asia, but is now being cultivated in parts of India and even in Hawaii. At this time it is illegal to import fresh Mangosteen Fruit into the US because of the concerns with the Asian Fruit Fly.

Like the Goji Berry, the Mangosteen has some very unique properties.

The Mangosteen fruit contains special types of antioxidants known as xanthenes. So far, scientists have identified 200 individual xanthenes and the Mangosteen fruit contains an amazing 40 of them. This fruit is one of the rare cases where the processed fruit is more nutritious than the fresh fruit. As seen in the photo, the center of the fruit is white. It is juicy and delicious, but contains little nutrient value. The outer part of the Mangosteen is where the high nutrient values lies. Unfortunately, it is considered inedible in the fresh fruit because of its texture and flavor. Therefore, we use reconstituted Mangosteen Juice from Whole Garcinia Mangosteen fruit in order to get the benefit of the nutrients in the outer deep purple rind.

I have spent a great deal of time over the past few weeks extolling the benefits of goji berry juice, but one cannot say too much about its benefits.

The juice for Healthy Blend is made from the whole, freshly harvested goji berry. We do not strain out the healthful benefits found in the skin and seed of this berry. When you consume a whole food, you get the maximum level of nutrient available in the food.

Traditional Tibetan medicine did not use extracts of one element or another, they used the whole berry. The Goji Berry was particularly used in treating liver ailments and vision problems. Traditional Tibetan Medicine is not a simple system. It involved a complex process of diagnosis considering the mind, the body and the spirit. Treatments often included diet, herbal medications, spiritual practice and physical requirements such as exercise and breathing technique.

As you begin using Healthy Blend, also consider ways to live a healthier lifestyle. Take time to be calm and relax. Eat a balanced diet. Drink purified water. Enjoy a walk. Smile more often.

Living healthy,

A bit ago I told you about the different juices we offer at Goji’s & More. For the next week or so I want to focus on the specific juices in our Healthy Blend Juice. This juice is made up of 6 different juices. It contains 20% goji berry juice, 20% Mangosteen Juice and 20% Noni Juice. The remaining 40% is comprised of Acia, Camu-Camu, Aloe Vera Juice and triple filtered water.

Each of these juices comes from different parts of the world and in combination provide you with the widest range of natural juices available. Each juice is high in antioxidants and has its own unique properties. The only reason we add the triple filtered water is to reduce the density somewhat making it more drinkable, and so that 2oz per day is an appropriate portion size.

I hope you keep up with this discussion as we explore each of these exotic juices individually.
